Are Xerics truly the answer? That depends!
Let’s ask a different way.
How can I reduce the amount of water I use in my yard?
Now that’s a great question!
Not surprisingly, there is a specific scientific explanation of Xeriscaping, which would make your eyes glaze over. What you really want to know is, “What can I plant in my yard to save money on water?” At Leaf Landscape Supply, we know you want your yard to look good and save water.

Here are a few super important questions to ask before choosing plants!
What is my soil type?
How does the water flow through my yard?
What are the sun/shade patterns?
Now, let’s dig into the fun part – the plants!
A. Any plant, even Xeric like agave, cactus, and yucca, will require more water in the first year or two in your landscape.
B. Some plants not strictly labeled Xeric can withstand low water conditions once they are established. This includes crepe myrtle, Mexican and Texas varieties of redbud, and Mexican Plum.

C. Include ground cover plants to help keep water in the soil by reducing evaporation. Some good examples here are Frogfruit, Horseherb, and Silver Ponyfoot. (there are non-plant choices as well)
Bonus: The City of Austin has a program to defray the costs of converting parts of your landscape for low water use. Check this link for more information.
