Gregg’s Blue Mist Flower

Gregg’s Blue Mist Flower really is a Super Star – Texas Size!

Gregg‘s Blue Mist flower was named a Texas Superstar ® in fall of 2024. One of among 90 that have earned this coveted title. Deservedly so!

Native to Texas and much of the U.S., Blue Mist attracts a stunning number of butterflies during its bloom period, late summer through fall. Blue Mist (flowers are blue) along with other late bloomers like Fall Aster provide crucial nectar to local Queen butterflies and also for Monarchs traveling south for winter. The seeds produced after flowering are a food source important to birds.

This is a relatively low maintenance plant. They can be pruned to 3 inches from the ground in early spring after the last freeze. They can also be dead headed after bloom to encourage more blooms and discourage reseeding. No need to fertilize these plants and no serious diseases or pests reported.

They prefer sun to partial shade and protection from the hottest afternoon sun. Water requirements are low to medium. Pollinators like bees, and butterflies are attracted to Abelia as well as hummingbirds!

Mature Size: 2-3ft H, 2-3ft W: forms colonies by rhizomes and seed

Light Requirement: Sun to Partial Shade. Prefers 6 hours morning sun, Part shade remainder of the day

Water Need: Low to Medium. Medium water to establish, low thereafter – unless in a container which will require medium water

Soil: Slightly alkaline but tolerant of others as long as well drained

Cold Hardiness: Zone 5 (-20 to -15F) to 10 (35 to 40F)

This is one of nature’s powerhouse plants and should be in every yard, landscape installation, pocket garden, and balcony container!
